The Howff - Bar Branding

The Howff - A place for family and familiarity.
Over lockdown with a ban on visiting and stricter rules around pubs and socialising my dad had the idea to convert his garage into a bar. Much more than a place to have a few drinks, this was a sanctuary to escape work, the news and the stresses of daily lockdown life.

I created the brand and visual identity for him, drawing inspiration from the surrounding hills, wildlife and ties to traditional Scots.

The concept
After deciding on the concept I was able to expand the artwork into final variations that would also let us look at printing options for coasters, mats and signage.

The name: The Howff, or Howf is a 'Scots' noun for an enclosed space or shelter, and a verb to visit a familiar place. This encapsulated what the space was being built for. An escapism for a time, to feel safe, welcome and warm. It has since became exactly that for his family and friends.

The logo
The logo features a stags head, taking inspiration from the hills and surrounding area and drawing on personal anecdotes from his childhood.

Bringing these together
These were brought together stylistically to create the brand identity. A silhouette of a stags head with the antlers stretching up and forming the word Howff. Contrasting typefaces were used to reduces the flatness of the image where little opportunity for contrast is available.  You can see the variation process below.
Exploring the concept
The concept was expanded and mockups have been included of coasters, beer mats and signage featuring natural materials to complement a natural and organic aesthetic.
